Do the Poles make a miracles only in moments of trial?
On the 26 of Jan 2010 at Literary Publishing house www.wydawnictwoliterackie.pl at Dluga street no 1 a debate about polish patriotism took place, which was a way to promote the book "Warsaw 1920 - Lenin's failed conquest of Europe".
Participant of the debate were: prof. Piotr Sztompka - one of the most famous polish sociologists, Andrzej Wajda - one of the most famous polish directors and Adam Zamoyski - historian author of the book "Warsaw 1920 - Lenin's failed conquest of Europe".
Battle of Warsaw was one of the most important battles in polish history and it gave polish people possibility to have independent country between World Wars period 1918-1939.
Furthermore according to Edgar Vincent, 1st Viscount D'Abernon it was the eighteenth decisive battle of the whole world history.
Debate took place in a art nouveau designed Mehoffer's hall picture
Interior and guests made this debate unforgettable.
Adam Zamoyski who is actually a member of one of the most famous and ancient polish noble family, with his eloquence, education (he speaks fluently 5 languages) and performance reminiscing polish aristocracy from the time that Poland was the biggest country in Europe.
Andrzej Wajda who was awarded an Oscar and said few backstage stories about shooting historical movies.
Piotr Sztompka who approached the topic from a scientific point of view.
All participant agreed that the most important for polish patriotism was WWII when all of the polish nation was threatened and fighting.
But also roots of the Polish people's deeds during the WWII were in the Second Republic of Poland, which wouldn't have existed if the Poles had lost the battle of Warsaw in 1920.
So to know roots of Polish patriotism it is very recommendable to read this book. Especially because the author is well known for very approachable language, not only for historians, and luckily this book is also published in English. :)
