About

What comes to your mind when you’re in Berlin and someone says “communism”? The Wall? GDR? Hotspot of the Cold War?

All of these things are an important portion of our tour, but they’re only a part of the topic called “communism & socialism”. So our goal is more ambitious than just showing you the Berlin Wall and mentioning a couple of chapters of the Cold War history. We want to give you a holistic understanding of one of the most revolutionary and controversial ideological movements in world history.

How? By way of having a chronological journey from the 19th to 21st century and covering all the main chapters of the history of German communism. You will learn about the fathers of communist ideas – K. Marx & F. Engels and what they really taught about. You’ll hear the story of R. Luxembourg & K. Liebknecht and understand their role in a political struggle that tore German society apart 100 years ago and thus also helped A. Hitler rise to power. You’ll see and compare the Soviet model of socialism exported to Germany after WWII: you’ll experience it architecturally, grasp it geopolitically and perceive it through people’s life stories. Finally, we’ll talk about leftwing movements today.

After this 3 hours Walkative journey, you’ll form a historical Gestalt of communist & socialist ideas! Both in Germany and Europe (and even beyond). Both before and after WWII. Long before and long after.

You will discover:

• Marx-Engels Forum – a memorial dedicated to the fathers of communist ideas

• Liebknecht balcony – a place of the proclamation of the Free Socialist Republic of Germany

• Volksbühne at the Rosa Luxemburg Platz – formerly the most representative theatre in Berlin

• Karl Marx Allee – the most impressive Stalinist architecture in Germany

• Frankfurter Tor – an example of further development of socialist ideas in East Germany

• The Berlin Wall (East Side Gallery) – the longest remaining part of the notorious border between East and West

Nice tour on socialist Berlin woth Alex

We had a nice time woth Alex discovering the socialist history of Berlin. The visit and Alex’s commentaries were good although I think that we could have spent less time on the pure history telling with the relief of the Mutter Hoppe restaurant (many events were covered in previous Walkative tours) and maybe spend some time visiting the Eastern part of the city around Frankfurter Tor (maybe toward the Stasi museum or Stasi prison)

Had a fantastic walk with Will. His knowledge was amazing as is his passion. There is so much to take in here that you need a guide to show you things you would never find on your own. Plus have the personality to lead the group and keep it together. It was my 3rd Walkative tour in 3 days. Did not disappoint. Looking forward to more Walkative tours in Poland.

An absolutely terrific tour with Ru, knowledgable, approachable, enthusiastic and well balanced account of the origins and development of socialism in Berlin. I thought I knew a lot about this topic and I learned so much! So enjoyable, 100% recommend!

Alex was a great tour guide with a very clear voice that would fit nicely on a radio show. He clearly has learned much about Berlin and its history during his 14 years living there which he will showcase in great detail during the tour.

A few things I would suggest:

– Shorten the time spent at Volksbühne. There is a lot of history on the relief there but it felt we spent too much time on it relative to the other sites

– Go to Frankfurter Tor earlier or change that part of the tour. We took a train to the area but there was really only one point of interest there. Everywhere else, we walked to and had more points of interest along the way so that part felt a little disjointed.

– Some standing points were too close to the road so it was hard to hear Alex over the sound of cars.
