Budapest came out of the Second World War heavily damaged, depopulated, raped and starved. Liberated by the Soviets, Hungary and its capital remained under Moscow’s control for many years to come, finally regaining freedom in 1989.
Our Communist Budapest tour will introduce you to the times of Soviet domination. From the end of the war, through the bloody Hungarian Revolution of 1956, years of so-called “goulash communism” when Hungary was named “the merriest barrack in the Soviet block” up to regaining freedom in 1989. But it will be much more than historical facts. Everyone a bit over 30 in this country remembers the times of communism, so our tour will be a first-hand account of how life looked like behind the Iron Curtain. We will help you understand the issues related to travelling, housing, religious life, education, media, propaganda, sport, healthcare as well as the economy of the era and compare them with the post-Communist situation. The tour will also give you an insight to how local people think and how the communist times affect their attitudes and their behaviour until the present day.
