Poznan – one of the most beautiful cities in Poland

Poznan is not only one of the biggest cities in Poland, but also one of the most popular – and for a good reason! Numerous historical monuments, a rich history and extensive green areas make it the ideal place for a holiday trip. What is worth seeing during a trip to Poznan? First of all you should definitely visit the Old Town. Among other things, it houses the beautiful Renaissance Town Hall. Every day at noon, a bugle call is played from here and the famous Poznań billy goats appear on the tower for a few moments. In addition to the Town Hall, the Old Market Square has many beautiful townhouses, but particularly charming are the smaller, colourful houses constructed in the 16th century that once belonged to poorer merchants.

Walking around the Old Market Square, it is also worth paying attention to the classicist building of the old guardhouse, which currently houses the Museum of the Greater Poland Uprising 1918-1919. Its collections include photographs, drawings, paintings, documents, as well as uniforms or banners related to the activities of the Greater Poland independence movement. The Old Market Square can be reached via Półwiejska Street. This is the city’s main promenade, with many shops, restaurants and cosy cafes, as well as the Stary Browar (Old Brewery) centre of commerce and art. It’s worth a visit, even if you don’t feel like shopping – the building’s architecture has won numerous awards and still delights both tourists and locals alike.

Poznan – other attractions

During a tour of Poznań, you can also admire many religious buildings. The most important of these is the Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul, located on Ostrów Tumski. It is the oldest cathedral in the country and the burial place of the first rulers of Poland. Also eye-catching is the beautifully restored Baroque collegiate basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, the Poznań Parish Church. Fans of sacral architecture will also enjoy the late-Romanesque Church of St. John of Jerusalem, St. Martin’s Church, the Parish Church of the Holy Saviour and St. Adalbert’s Church with a wooden bell tower from the 16th century.

Another Poznań’s major attraction is the former imperial castle. It was built at the beginning of the 20th century for the last German emperor and king of Prussia, Wilhelm II. Today, it houses a number of cultural institutions and some of the chambers function as exhibition and concert halls. Also close to the castle are the monumental Neo-Romanesque post office building, the adjacent building of Ziemstwo (local government institution) and several buildings of the Adam Mickiewicz University: Collegium Maius, Collegium Minus and Collegium Iuridicum. They will appeal to all architecture lovers.
