Madrid was once a capital of the powerful Spanish Empire, whose influence reached every continent. A city that changed hands many times and eventually became the capital thanks to the Habsburgs, who moved the capital here from the stately Toledo (a city combining Christianity, Islam, and Judaism), but truly blossomed under the Bourbons. Here the decisions were made that resulted in colonial conquests (like the one of Christopher Columbus) and the expansion of the empire further and further. A mix of amazing architecture funded by far-flung expeditions that always attracted poets and artists – Cervantes, Velázquez, Goya and Picasso to name but a few. Here sits one of the world’s greatest museums, the Prado.

On our tour, we will explore the oldest parts of Madrid. We’ll start at the symbolic entrance to the city, the Puerta del Sol (Sun Gate), from where we’ll head into Madrid’s narrow streets. Expect the Spanish Inquisition (although no one expects the Spanish Inquisition!) and a solid dose of historical knowledge about the city, from the Habsburgs and the Bourbons up to the dark times of the dictatorship of Francisco Franco. But it will be much more than a historical lesson. We will also learn where the bullfights – corridas – were held and why native Madridis call themselves “Gatos” (Cats). You will also get to know what you have to do to become a Cat. We will show you what the local people eat and where they drink, that is a must as nowadays Madrid is considered to be one of the European culinary hotspots.

Today, its old grandeur faded away somewhat, but Madrid is still a vibrant and captivating metropolis. A place that despite being colder than most of Spain (it’s located at an altitude of 667 meters!) still exudes a hot Spanish soul! Experience it yourself by going to a party in Madrid or attending a Real Madrid match at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu! But most of all by joining our tour, learning its history and getting to know the true soul of Madrid!

On this 2 h 15 min tour we will see and discover:

  • Puerta del Sol square – the beating heart of the city

  • why calamari is so important to the Madrid diet

  • Plaza Mayor – the most recognizable square of Madrid

  • the oldest restaurant… in the world!

  • Royal Palace and Almudena Cathedral

  • …and much, much more!

After visiting Madrid do check our tours in other Spanish cities: Seville and Cordoba!

I disagree very much your organisation, becauase last thursday you destroied my programs and visits. Booking 2 places with italian guide at 4,00 p.m., I was there at 3,45. Around 4 p.m. we foud your guide there, who said he was very surprised and thre was no italian guide there! After discussing 2 minmutes (and he was very very disagreable) we accepted to be waiting 30 minutes ad realize the visit in english. At 4,30 we were told that also in english it was impossible, just and only spanish one! After long discussions we obtained that awaiting for another guide coming in 15 minutes. And we realized the visit. This guide (AUNA ?) was very kind and offered many informations. But it’s not correct and not professional at all, that you confirm the visits, you let’s await 1h30 on the square and finally the visit was impossible. I understand the english nbut my friend nt at all. We could arrange some other visits, but we lost the afternoon just trusting in your organization.

Although the tourist spots per sé are not spectacular, the tour guide has a sense of humour which gives flavour to the tour. Thus, it makes you interested to listen.
