About the tour

Rome is a city where history, religion, and power have been intertwined for centuries. Nowhere is this more evident than in the Vatican, the heart of Catholicism and one of the most influential places in the world. A place of deep spiritual significance, breathtaking architecture, and centuries of history. But beyond the grandeur of St. Peter’s Basilica and the lavish ceremonies that took place there for centuries, lies a hidden world of ambition, intrigue, and power struggles that shaped not only Rome but the entire world. This tour will take you through the fascinating history of Christianity, the rise of the papacy, and the secrets that have surrounded it for centuries. Join us as we walk the streets where saints, emperors, and popes made history!

Rome, the Church, and the Making of History

What is now the most powerful religion began in Rome in complete secrecy, with early followers meeting in underground catacombs to avoid persecution. That changed dramatically with Emperor Constantine, who, after a legendary battle at the Milvian Bridge, became the first Roman emperor to convert to Christianity. He allowed Christians to worship freely, which led to the construction of grand churches and the growing influence of the the clergy of Rome.

Over time, the papacy became not just a religious authority but a political powerhouse, shaping the course of European history. Popes ruled Rome like kings, waged wars, commissioned masterpieces, and, at times, found themselves caught in scandal. The Vatican transformed from a place of worship into a center of global power, influencing emperors, nations, and diplomacy.

What Will You See on This Tour?

We will begin our tour at San Giovanni dei Fiorentini church, a hidden gem with deep ties to the powerful Medici family and an important stop for pilgrims on their way to the Vatican. Here, we will set the stage for the rise of Christianity and the figures who shaped it, including St. Peter and St. Paul, Rome’s new “Romulus and Remus.”

We will then follow in the footsteps of early Christians and pilgrims, making our way toward Ponte Sant’Angelo, the iconic bridge lined with angelic sculptures, leading to Castel Sant’Angelo. Originally built as Emperor Hadrian’s mausoleum, this imposing fortress later became a papal refuge during times of war and crisis. Shrouded in legends, it has witnessed dramatic events, from sieges to assassinations.

Continuing along Via della Conciliazione, we will approach the Vatican’s grand entrance. This boulevard, commissioned by Mussolini as part of the agreement between the Vatican and Italy, symbolizes the delicate balance of power between Church and state. As we walk, we will discuss how the Vatican became the smallest country in the world and the impact of this status on global politics today.

Our final destination will be St. Peter’s Square, one of the most famous landmarks in the world, the heart of Vatican City, where the magnificent St. Peter’s Basilica dominates the skyline. Designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, this vast piazza welcomes millions of visitors each year. Here, we will explain the deeper meaning behind its architectural features, from the colonnades symbolizing the embrace of the Church to the obelisk that witnessed some of the darkest moments of Rome’s history. Although we won’t enter St. Peter’s Basilica during the tour, we will provide useful tips on how to visit on your own, including information about entry rules and what to expect inside.

As we move through Rome and Vatican neighborhoods, we will see much more than the world famous landmarks! We will show you small, easily missed details—from centuries-old inscriptions, hidden passages and symbols of papal power. All to give you a deeper understanding of the city of Rome beyond the tourist crowds.
