My name is Alex, and though I grew up in Reading just outside London, I have called Berlin home since the summer of 2010. I originally arrived looking for an adventure, but I ended up staying after developing a deep appreciation for the city and its history. I have been leading tours with Walkative! since 2022, and I thoroughly enjoy sharing my knowledge with visitors. One of my favorite aspects of guiding is offering recommendations for local bars and restaurants, particularly in Kreuzberg and Neukölln, the former West Berlin districts where I have lived for nearly my entire time here. I simply love helping people enjoy the city in the same way that I do.

While I cover a wide range of subjects on my tours, I am particularly drawn to the communist era and the history of East Germany. I like to explore the complicated nature of this period, helping guests understand the historical shades of grey and how communism manifested throughout Berlin. When I am not guiding, I spend my time researching and writing about these same subjects. I host and write radio documentaries for the BBC, frequently focusing on local history. My documentary work includes stories about the treehouse on the Berlin Wall, a man known as the Japanese Schindler, and a 1961 steam train escape from East Berlin.
