March 2026 marks the transition from winter to spring in Barcelona. As the days lengthen, the city’s calendar fills with events ranging from political expression to local gastronomy. This year is particularly significant as it marks the centennial of Antoni Gaudí’s death, a milestone observed throughout the city with special programming.

On March 8, Barcelona observes International Women's Day. This is a major event in the local calendar, typically characterized by a large march moving from Plaça de Catalunya down Passeig de Gràcia to the Arc de Triomf. It is a day of demonstration and community, often accompanied by workshops and art. For a cultural perspective, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona (MACBA) frequently curates exhibitions focused on female artists to coincide with the date.

Cultural and culinary events also define the month. The Barcelona Obertura Spring Festival begins March 1, bringing classical music to iconic venues across the city. For a taste of authentic Catalan tradition, La Calçotada al Poble on March 7 offers a chance to try grilled calçots—sweet onions charred over fire. Served in the Plaça Major, this is a hands-on dining experience typical of the region.

From the solemnity of the Gaudí centennial to the activity of local markets, March offers much to explore. If you would like help navigating the history and stories connecting these events, we would be delighted to welcome you on one of our walking tours.
