What to see in London?

London is, without any doubt, one of the most electrifying cities in the world. Sitting on the River Thames it is the capital and the largest city in the UK. Culture and art, music and theatre, history and museums, its dizzying pace and diversity form a fabulous mix comparable to very few places on this planet. With a myriad of options and places to see it is easy to get lost so if you want to have your sightseeing planned for you join a so-called free walking tour with an experienced London guide. Let yourself be taken to the most beautiful corners of the city and hear colourful stories about its past! What will you see?

To start your tour of London you should definitely see Westminster Abbey, one of the greatest examples of English Gothic style where the famous royal weddings and coronations take place. Not far you can admire the Buckingham Palace built in 1703 and from 1837 serving as the official royal residence in London. Those places located in the West End symbolise not only the royal power, but in fact the dualism of power in England – divided between the monarchs and the parliament. This is also where you will find the seat of the English Parliament – the Palace of Westminster with the iconic Elizabeth Tower. Commonly known as the Big Ben, sounding every full hour, it is the beating heart of the entire country.

In this part of the city you will also find the iconic squares – Trafalgar Square and Piccadilly Circus and can walk to Downing Street to find the Prime Minister’s house. Theatre lovers will have a treat here as well – not far from where the original Shakespeare theatre stood, you can sit and watch a play in the Globe. The original one doesn’t exist anymore but the Globe reconstructed in 1997 resembles the prototype as closely as possible.

The most important sights of The City

London is clearly divided between East End and West End – East End is where the working class once lived, West End those much more privileged. And in the middle of it all is the City – the hub of trade, crafts, and money. Many tours of London’s City start with St. Paul’s Cathedral, a place that has seen many important events: Queen Elisabeth birthdays and funerals of Sir Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher, among others. Here you can also pass the iconic Tower Bridge, see the London’s Eye and walk up to the Tower of London, a place where many famous heads were chopped off and where notorious king Henry VIII imprisoned his many wives.

Pubs and museums – what places to visit during your stay

While visiting London you can’t miss two things: museums and pubs. The city is a home to many wonderful museums and galleries and you should definitely make time to visit at least some of them. Victoria and Albert Museum boasts a collection of 2,3 million (!) objects and many exhibits are free of charge. The British Museum was the first museum established in London in 1753, you will find there many priceless artefacts, for example the Rosetta Stone. In the National Gallery you can admire works of da Vinci, Michelangelo, Rembrandt, van Gogh, Picasso, Matisse, Cézanne and Turner and the admission is also free. If you are travelling with kids, the Natural History Museum will definitely be a hit!

To relax after sightseeing you should head to one of London’s pubs. For that visit the Covent Garden, Kensington or Soho.
