May in Krakow brings an atmosphere entirely its own, offering a chance to join local events and traditions you will simply not find anywhere else. Whether you are exploring the medieval streets or watching the lively crowds in the squares, this month provides a unique opportunity to experience the authentic spirit of the city alongside its residents.

The month begins with Majówka, a major series of national holidays stretching from Labour Day on May 1st to Constitution Day on May 3rd. The May 3rd celebration is particularly important for Poles, as it honors the 1791 Constitution, which was the first modern written constitution in Europe. During this time, the city engages in patriotic ceremonies, military displays on the Błonia meadow, and traditional public singing lessons on the Little Market Square.

Mid-month brings a completely different energy with Juwenalia, Krakow’s famous student festival. As a visitor, the best way to experience this is to watch the Friday parade, a highly entertaining tradition where you can see local students dressed in funny, creative costumes temporarily taking over the city streets. Around the same time, the Krakow Film Music Festival takes place, offering world-class live concerts, including a special screening and live orchestra performance of 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone'.

For history and culture enthusiasts, the Night of Museums on May 15th is an excellent opportunity to explore the city after dark. Dozens of galleries, historical sites, and cultural institutions open their doors to host exhibitions and special shows. To participate, you simply need to check the official program online, choose the venues you want to visit, and be prepared to wait in line, as entry to most locations is usually free or requires only a symbolic entry fee of a single coin.

Beyond these special events, there is always plenty of everyday history and culture to uncover in the city. To properly orient yourself, consider joining the Welcome to Kraków!
