May in Munich always starts with a very local tradition: the raising of Bavarian maypoles in several districts, often accompanied by music, food, and neighbourhood gatherings. It is a good introduction to the city’s early-summer mood: beer gardens filling up, outdoor tables returning to the pavements, longer walks along the Isar river, and plenty happening between folk traditions, culture, sport, and music.
Frühlingsfest (Spring Festival) at the Theresienwiese continues into May and brings a smaller, springtime version of Munich’s folk-festival atmosphere, with fairground rides, beer tents, and classic Bavarian food. On 3 May, the Day of Customs adds a particularly traditional note, with costume associations, horse-drawn carriages, brass bands, Schuhplattler dancers, and whip crackers on the festival grounds.
Auer Dult Maidult at Mariahilfplatz is another May classic, running from late April into early May. It combines market stalls with antiques, household goods, ceramics, snacks, and a modest funfair, making it a good choice if you want something traditional but less crowded than the biggest city events.
Giro di Monaco on 17 May, the same day as FC Bayern’s championship celebrations at Marienplatz, offers a different view of the city: a charity run with a 5-kilometre loop around the Old Town Ring, starting at 11:00. It is not about official timing, but about community, participation, and the open-air programme at the finish line. Keep in mind that 1 May, 14 May, and 25 May are public holidays in Germany, so shops and the central market are closed, while restaurants and beer gardens generally remain open.
May is a good month to experience Munich on foot, whether you are here for traditions, museums, football crowds, concerts, or simply a relaxed afternoon in a beer garden.
