March in Krakow is often described by the local proverb "w marcu jak w garncu" (in March like in a pot), meaning the weather mixes everything together. You might experience rain, snow, and sun within the span of a single hour. Despite this unpredictability, the energy in the city shifts noticeably as locals anticipate the arrival of spring. It is a time of transition, where winter coats are slowly traded for lighter jackets.

One of the most visible dates is International Women's Day on March 8. This day has deep roots in Poland. You will likely see flower shops overflowing with tulips and men carrying bouquets for female family members, friends, and colleagues. While the tradition was heavily promoted during the socialist era, it remains significant today. It is also a day for acknowledging women's rights, often marked by the annual "Manifa" demonstration supporting equality.
Mid-month brings the Drowning of Marzanna, traditionally held around March 21. This Slavic folk custom involves carrying an effigy symbolizing winter to the river and drowning it to ensure the return of spring. The city’s cultural calendar also becomes more active, featuring events such as the Misteria Paschalia festival, the AI Art Biennale, and concerts including Florence + The Machine.
As the holidays approach, the Main Market Square hosts the Easter Market. Unlike the Christmas market, this event focuses on spring rituals. Look for pisanki - elaborately decorated eggs - and traditional Easter palms made from dried flowers, willows, and grasses. These are highlighted during Palm Sunday festivities, specifically the local contests to construct the tallest palm.
With the days getting longer, Walkative is officially switching to our spring schedule. This allows us to reintroduce experiences that are best enjoyed in clearer weather. We are pleased to invite you to our KL Plaszow Concentration Camp – Guided Tour, which explores the history of the site portrayed in Schindler’s List, as well as our Traditional Polish Food Tour.
