Things to do in Krakow in June 2026
June in Krakow is marked by warmer weather and a focus on local folklore. The city hosts several public events that highlight regional traditions. If you are visiting this month, two of the most prominent festivals offer an excellent way to experience local culture.
The Great Dragon Parade
The annual Great Dragon Parade celebrates the Wawel Dragon, Krakow’s most recognized mythical figure. The main event takes place on the bend of the Vistula River, directly beneath Wawel Castle.
During the evening river parade, large, illuminated dragon figures are animated by actors on barges. The display is accompanied by music, lasers, and fireworks. It is a popular weekend event that draws significant crowds and offers a visual retelling of the city's founding legend.
The Lajkonik Festival
The march of the Lajkonik is one of Krakow's oldest traditions. The legend behind the festival is rooted in the 13th century, following the Tatar invasions. According to local lore, a raftsman successfully repelled the attackers, dressed in the garments of the fallen Tatar leader, and rode into the Main Market Square to announce that the city was safe.
Today, the Lajkonik - a bearded figure in bright, eastern-inspired clothing riding a decorated wooden hobby horse - travels through the city accompanied by traditional folk bands. He uses a golden mace to playfully tap onlookers, a gesture traditionally said to bring good luck for the year ahead.
The procession concludes in the Main Market Square. It is a unique opportunity to observe a living symbol of Krakow on the streets alongside locals and other visitors.
Both events provide a genuine glimpse into the history and legends that continue to shape Krakow today.
