September is one of the best months to visit Athens. The summer heat starts to ease, locals return to the city, and the cultural calendar fills up again with exhibitions, concerts, festivals, and outdoor events.

Art and history lovers have several options this month. At the Acropolis Museum, Inspirations: Ancient Greek Art Living in Italy explores the influence of ancient Greek art in Italy and runs until September 6. For contemporary art, Gen X: Tales from the Forgotten Generation continues at the DESTE Foundation, while the Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation hosts guided visits and activities connected with Jannis Psychopedis's Landscapes of Memory.

Music is also a big part of September in Athens. The Parklife series at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center features Beatles Symphonic on September 6 and a Leonard Cohen Tribute on September 12. The Φ Hill Sessions bring outdoor concerts to Philopappou Hill throughout the month, while the Rock Hard Festival and Black Coffee offer options for rock and electronic music fans.

For a taste of Greek culture and traditions, don't miss the Rizes Festival on September 19, which brings the atmosphere of a traditional Greek panigiri to Athens through folk, rebetiko and laiko music and dancing. The same weekend, the Green Weekend at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center focuses on environmental issues and this year's theme: water.

September also brings several interesting cultural events, including the Platforms Project, an independent contemporary art fair at the Tobacco Factory, and the Athens Coffee Festival at Technopolis in Gazi from September 26–28.

One date worth marking in your calendar is European Heritage Days. During the weekend of September 26–27, state museums and archaeological sites offer free admission, making it a great opportunity to discover Athens' cultural heritage without an entrance fee.

With cooler weather and the city becoming lively again after the summer, September is also a great month to explore Athens on foot. you can join a Walkative Athens tour and speak directly with a local guide.
