About

Naples is a city steeped in history, rich culture, and stunning architecture. From the picturesque location on the Gulf of Naples, at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, through ancient ruins and great museums to delicious cuisine, Naples has something for everyone. Join our Welcome to Naples free tour to discover the city and its wonders!

Naples’ long and fascinating history dates back to ancient times. The area was originally settled by Greeks in the first millennium BC. During the mediaeval period Naples grew to be an important cultural and intellectual centre, with renowned scholars such as Thomas Aquinas and Giordano Bruno studying there. It became the capital of the Kingdom of Naples in the 13th century, which lasted until the Italian unification in the 19th century. In the 17th century under the rule of the Bourbon dynasty, the city experienced a period of artistic and cultural flourishing and was known as the centre of Baroque style. Over its history it has been ruled by a variety of different powers, including the Spanish, French, and Austrians. This diversity has left its mark on the city, creating a rich and unique cultural heritage that is still visible today.

During the Welcome to Naples free tour we will take you through centuries of the city’s existence, starting from ancient Roman ruins through mediaeval castles, stunning Baroque churches, charming squares and busy streets. Our journey starts at the majestic Neptune’s Fountain, situated in the heart of Piazza Municipio – the fountain, a nod to the city’s close relationship with the sea, features the god Neptune surrounded by nymphs, satyrs, and seahorses. Next to the Piazza Municipio stands the imposing structure of Castel Nuovo, or the New Castle. This iconic mediaeval fortress, adorned with majestic towers and an intricately decorated Triumphal Arch, has been a symbol of the city’s power since the 13th century. We venture next towards Piazza del Plebiscito, the city’s largest public square. Surrounded by monumental edifices like the impressive 17th century Royal Palace and the San Francesco di Paola Church, with its history of public gatherings and events, Piazza del Plebiscito resonates with the spirit of Naples. A stone’s throw away is the San Carlo Theatre, one of the oldest continuously active opera houses in the world which serves as a testament to the city’s long standing love affair with the arts. We then stroll down the famous Via Toledo, a bustling shopping street lined with charming cafes, restaurants, and historic buildings to reach the unique Gesù Nuovo church. As we walk around the city our guides will regale you with tales of famous Neapolitans, such as the poet and philosopher Giacomo Leopardi, the composer Gioachino Rossini, and the legendary Caravaggio, whose masterpieces can be found in the city’s churches and museums. But historical sites are not the only wonder of Naples – they come together with delicious food (best pizza in the world!), vibrant street life, colourful markets, and lively nightlife scene. The setting of Naples makes it also an excellent base for exploring the Campania region: charming Amalfi Coast, Pompeii – an ancient Roman city that was buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, and the beautiful island of Capri.

My wife and I went on the tour led by Claudia and she was really really great! She mixed interesting information, with personal anecdotes and humour. We stopped to have traditional Neapolitan coffee and it was overall a really enjoyable introduction to Naples.

Need to supply headphones

A lot of the invaluable information and communication was missed due to us not being supplied with headphones. The areas visited are way too busy and noisy to miss this essential feature out. I have done 4 other tours of Naples with other providers (also “free” tours) and they all provided headphones.

Our amazing guide Paola showed us every we had to see in Naples in 2,5h. She was super nice, explained everything clearly, and always made us stand in the shade when she was talking. 10/10 would recommend.

We booked our Tour with Carmen and walked through Naples for almost three hours. It was a lot of fun and easy to understand, eventhough not all participants understood all. Great introduction to the city. She even gave us some recommendations for good food and what to do. Awesome!

We had a fantastic tour with Carmen in Naples. We visited all the main sights of interest and Carmen combined humour with history. We learned so many things in two hours 😉. Also, her English was clear and you could understand everything she said. Highly recommend.
