November brings a different atmosphere to Athens. The summer crowds are long gone, temperatures are cooler, and the city offers plenty of cultural events, live performances and opportunities to experience local traditions.
Art lovers can visit Miltos Skouras: In Between the Visible. Painting 1983–2026, an exhibition tracing more than four decades of the artist's work. Running until November 22, it is also a great option for visitors looking for something cultural that won't cost a thing, as admission is free.
November is also an exciting month for performing arts. Dance enthusiasts shouldn't miss Pina Bausch's Vollmond at the Athens Concert Hall from November 6–9, an iconic dance theatre performance combining poetic movement, water and theatrical scenery. Music lovers have plenty to choose from too, including The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari Revisited at the SNFCC on November 5, a live contemporary-music performance inspired by the famous expressionist film, and concerts by Encardia and Kwoon later in the month.
One of the biggest events of November is the Athens Authentic Marathon, taking place on November 7–8. Following the historic route from Marathon to Athens, the race finishes at the magnificent Panathenaic Stadium. Even if you're not running, it's worth heading there to cheer on the participants and experience the incredible atmosphere of this sporting tradition.
November is also an important month in modern Greek history. On November 17, Athens commemorates the 1973 Polytechnic Uprising, when students and workers revolted against the military dictatorship. The main gathering takes place around the National Technical University of Athens, near the National Archaeological Museum. Expect demonstrations and large crowds in the surrounding streets, so it's worth keeping this in mind when planning your visit.
For a taste of Athens' nightlife and professional scene, the Athens Bar Show takes place at Technopolis on November 3–4, bringing together bartenders and industry professionals from Greece and abroad. Later in the month, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra performs at the Athens Concert Hall on November 30, offering a wonderful opportunity to enjoy classical music in one of the city's leading cultural venues.
November is a lovely time to explore Athens at a slower pace, discover its museums and neighbourhoods, and enjoy the city beyond the main tourist season.
To truly get the most out of your visit during this exciting month, there is no better way to explore than by hitting the pavements with a local expert on one of our Walkative! tours. Joining the Welcome to Athens! Old Town Guided Walking Tour or the Alternative Athens Tour: Street Art, Counterculture, and Protests can give you access to a guide that will give you useful information and tell you about the events that you personally might like on that day. We can't wait to walk with you!
